Hey friend. I want to talk about something that’s been on my mind for quite some time. And it has to do with when an opportunity meeting goes wrong.
When someone stands up and yells “THIS IS A SCAM.” Or when you get into a huge argument because your guest thought they were coming to see a football game…
One of the cardinal rules in network marketing is to NOT say too much over the phone when inviting your prospects to an opportunity meeting. The main reason for this “rule” is that you really don’t want to cheapen a great opportunity that might otherwise help change someones life. Another reason is that it’s usually impossible to give an effective 30 second pitch for an opportunity that will appeal to the average person.
So we’re taught to dumb it down… don’t say too much… and have lots of urgency. And for the most part this method really works to get people out to your meetings. And I do agree with not saying too much in the initial conversation because you’ll usually turn people off.
But what happens when you get lots of people to a meeting; and they either feel tricked or lied to…
I once had a guy in my cold market explode on me saying that I lied to him. Of course; I didn’t feel like I lied but that didn’t matter much to him. Maybe there was a flaw in my invitation….
Anyway, When meetings end up like this it’s never a good look.
So here are 3 simple things to make sure you have in place so your guests don’t resent you after the meeting; making them more likely to join you in business:
1. Don’t lie. I suppose there is a fine line between misleading and lying; but don’t tell you guests their coming to a BBQ, then start presenting a business opportunity to them. It cheapens the business, and makes you look pretty bad.
2. Don’t say too much about the business upfront. 99% of the time you’ll lose a person’s interest if you try and pitch the business over the phone. Don’t confuse the invitation, with the presentation.
3. Be genuine and up front about the network marketing industry. This means to tell the people upfront that it takes WORK to make it in this industry. I’ve seen one to many presentations where the presenter is flashing huge numbers without giving the whole picture. This is misleading, and causes people to believe our industry is one big scam.
In the end – it’s really up to you how you invite to your meetings. But keep the above 3 things in mind and you’ll most likely get a higher percentage of people joining your business. It’s all about integrity.
My best,
Chuk.
